Thorold Council Targets High Food Prices

It voted for provincial help with growing local markets and increase peoples' ability to buy better food

Thorold city council is doing what it can to fight the high cost of food.

It passed a motion by Councillor Carmen DeRose asking the province to increase purchasing power to buy nutritious food, and encourage new markets for local food.

The councillor also referenced his job as a teacher.  "I see it at school everyday... thank you to an anonymous donor who donated to our food program.  But you wouldn't believe how much food we go through at school with kids who don't have breakfast."

The resolution also calls for re-exploring the labels of genetically modified food.

The councillor pointed out what everyone can see as the price of food keeps rising thanks to inflation.  "Surpassing more than 4-times what the annual inflation rate should be.... people are struggling.  It sounds like a lot, but it's the least we can do to try and play our part."

The motion also asks the province to work with Niagara municipalities to help area residents who are short on food.
