The Return of Cursive Writing in Ontario Schools

Ontario students in Grade 3 will learn cursive writing starting this September.

ONTARIO - Cursive writing will be making a comeback in Ontario schools.

The Ford Government has unveiled a new language curriculum, which will make cursive writing mandatory starting this September. Students will begin learning the skill in Grade 3.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says cursive writing is a critical life skill that helps students think more critically and express themselves more authentically.

The updated curriculum will also include a renewed focus on phonics.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission released a report last year, which stated Ontario's public education system was failing students, including those with reading disabilities, due to the lack of evidence-based approaches.
