Province Taking Steps to Expand Access to High-Speed Internet

Province looking to bring high-speed internet to over 300,000 homes and businesses in unserved and underserved communities.

The Ontario government has taken another step towards increasing access to high-speed internet.

Today, the province launched a Request for Qualifications as part of a bidding process to connect over 300,000 businesses and homes in underserved and unserved areas to high speed internet.

Qualified internet service providers will bid for opportunities to provide service through a new procurement process.

The process builds on the province's recent $14.7 million investment for 13 new projects under the Improving Connectivity for Ontario (ICON) program.

"Our government is bringing access to high-speed internet to every home and business across Ontario," said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. "By taking this next step, we are closer to ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to participating in this digital world. We’re saying that no matter where you live, you will have access to reliable, high-speed internet to work, learn, start a business, access vital services like health care, and connect with family and friends."

Ontario is one of only a few Canadian jurisdictions with a plan to achieve 100 percent connectivity.

The province has set a goal of bringing high-speed internet to every community by the end of 2025.
