UPDATE: Province Pumping Millions Into Justice System

Hoping to clear thousands of cases delayed because of the pandemic

The province is planning to spend more than $72 million over two years to tackle a backlog of court cases.

Attorney General Doug Downey calling it a first of its kind investment in the province's justice system.

The investment will allow for the hiring of more Crown prosecutors to ensure serious cases aren't being delayed.

In-person court proceedings were suspended in the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving tens of thousands of cases on hold for an undetermined amount of time.

Funds will also be used to recruit new staff to strengthen court and victim/witness services.
