Province Investing in Local Initiatives to Improve Fish Habitat

The Niagara Parks Commission and Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority are getting funds from the province for projects to help restore fish habitat on the Niagara River.

The Ontario government is investing in two local projects to help restore fish habitat.

The Niagara Parks Commission will receive $75,000 to conduct restoration projects and help restore fish habitat in a historically degraded area of the Niagara River.

As well, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is getting $199,000 to maintain progress on the concerning area of the Niagara River.

The NPCA will provide community engagement to encourage action and participation in decision making.

These are just two of the 24 projects that will benefit from a $2.8 million investment the province is making to protect the health of the Great Lakes.

Environment Minister David Piccini announced the investment today, saying the projects will help keep the Great Lakes healthy for future generations.

"Our government is proud to be delivering on our commitment to protect, conserve and restore the Great Lakes," said Piccini, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. "These 24 initiatives will not only have a positive impact on the water quality and ecosystem of the Great Lakes, but also on the well-being of the communities that rely on them now and for generations to come."

The funding is part of the province's $10.9 million multi-year investment to support projects brought forth by conservation authorities, environmental non-profits, Indigenous organizations and universities working to address commitments in the Canada-Ontario Great Lakes Agreement.
