Police Not Liable After Man's Arrest

The SIU says an injury happened to the man before arrest in St. Catharines, last September

Niagara police have been cleared of doing anything wrong following the arrest of a man in St. Catharines last September.

Police had been called to a home on Glenridge Avenue, for a complaint the man had threatened another man with a knife.  The suspect fled into a ravine towards Twelve Mile Creek, and was eventually caught.

Ontario's Special Investigations unit looked into the arrest, since the man was hospitalized with a collapsed lung.

Based on evidence, the SIU's director says the injury was caused when he fell into the ravine, prior to the arrest, leaving no potential criminal liability against any officer.

The SIU investigates whenever there's a death, serious injury or sexual assault in which police are involved.
