UPDATED: People 80 and Older May Soon Get Vaccinations

The province says that adults over 80 may get their first shot soon if their local public health unit has vaccinated the highest priority groups.

Provincial officials say that as COVID-19 immunization efforts expand, primary physicians may begin contacting those in that age group to book vaccination appointments.

General Rick Hillier says he's hopeful that seniors outside of homes can get vaccinated by the middle of March.

"We don't think we will be able to get into it in the first week or 10 days of March, but by the middle of March, we want to start vaccinating those people 80 years of age and older and we will be reaching out to them in the next week to two weeks, to tell them when there opportunity will become available, where they can go to book appointments."

The province also says that people aged 60-75 will get doses in April and May, and those 40 and older will have to wait until the summer.

Officials say that there will be 47,400 Moderna doses next week, but the supply is expected to increase in March.

The province is expecting to get between 173,000 and 186,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine every week during the month of March.

The supply increase will coincide with an expected expansion of the province's vaccine rollout to people 80 years old and over, seniors in congregate care and all Indigenous adults.
