No suspensions or arrests made

The Niagara Regional Police Service stopped 38 boats this weekend on the Niagara River and Lake Erie.

This was part of an initiative targeting impaired boat drivers.

Thirty-eight boats were stopped throughout the weekend, and one operator was asked to provide a breath sample.

While there were no license suspensions or arrests, officers did issue 20 infraction notices, most of which were for violations under Canada's Shipping Act.

Police say to legally consume alcohol on a boat, the following rules apply:

  • Permanently fixed toilet
  • Permanently fixed cooking facilities
  • Be anchored or docked.

Under the Liquor License Act of Ontario, open alcohol is not allowed in a boat.

Anyone who is convicted of alcohol related offences on the water will also be subject to the same suspensions and penalties as land-based drivers.
