Niagara to Switch to Every-Other-Week Garbage Collection

Regional Council has given the green light, to every-other-week garbage collection. Recycling and organics will still be collected weekly

Director of Waste Management Services Catherine Habermebel says this will help divert waste from the landfill.

"Those residents who currently may not be using their green bin or fully using their green bin, will now want to use the green bin. They will want to get all of the smelly materials out of the garbage and into the green bin."

Looking at the other municipalities who have made the switch, Habermebel says the move should also save the Region money.

"There has been cost savings or cost avoidance anywhere ranging from $200,000 to $12-million annually. Those numbers fluctuate based on the structure of the contract, the complexity of the contract, the size of the contract and what other services are being implemented."

Habermebel would like to have a contract awarded in the near future, so the new collection schedule can be implemented by October 2020.

Looking at the final vote; 19 Regional Councillors voted in favour of every-other-week garbage collection, while eight voted against it.
