Niagara Health Raising Awareness About Hepatitis C

Community event will be held to mark World Hepatitis Day

Niagara Health is marking World Hepatitis Day.

On Friday, an event will be held at Montebello Park from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

It'll include education about Niagara Health's Hepatitis C care clinic, as well as a health and social services fair.

There will also be hepatitis C testing and naloxone training and distribution.

Over 35 organizations and programs will take part.

"Our Niagara Falls event was a testament to the growth of our community and dedication of those who work to support it," says Karen Usick, Registered Nurse and Community Co-ordinator for the Hepatitis C Care Clinic. "We look forward to continuing our efforts to provide quality care and support to those in our community and encourage people to get tested for hepatitis C."

Hepatitis C is spread when blood carrying the virus gets into the bloodstream of another person.

The disease attacks the liver, and if untreated, can result in cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer.

The Hepatitis C care clinic opened in 2011, and provides testing, treatment, counselling and education.
