Niagara Health Doctor Warns of Increasing Cases in Younger People

A Niagara Health doctor says the spike in variant-related cases have led to more hospitalizations in younger people.

Niagara Health's Medical Director of Critical Care Dr. Ryan D'Sa says most of their patients are between the ages of 40 - 60.

"The bulk of our patients tends to be the 40- to 60-year-olds, and we’ve had people in their 20s and 30s in the Intensive Care Unit. Patients are younger, sicker, often deteriorating quickly."

In order to meet increasing demand, Niagara Health recently opened additional beds in areas not typically used for ICU.

Dr. D'Sa says in order to return to normal, strains need to be eased on the healthcare system while vaccination efforts increase.
