More Cameras Considered Around Vineland Scale Area

Officials aiming to stop truck drivers bypassing inspection, who may use King Street

The Town of Lincoln is reviewing the use of more cameras to prevent truck drivers from avoiding the Vineland truck scale near Victoria Avenue.

Representatives from the Ministry of Transportation say lowering the speed in town makes no difference.

There was a recent tour for government officials of where the cameras could go, and the extent to how far some drivers go to avoid the scale.  "We were literally driving and driving, and they said 'Are you kidding me? They actually take this route to get away?'... 45 minutes... even an hour, just to avoid an inspection, they'll do it, and the speed won't have a bearing."

Officials say two cameras near the scale do help, but more are needed to chase certain drivers.  They showed statistics to town council that whenever the lights are flashing for trucks to go in for inspection, there's a 26% increase of trucks using roads off the QEW.

Supervisor Rob Morningstar adds they know there is a reputation about this inspection station.

"The word out there is that Vineland holds a reputation for being very tough.  We have truck drivers that come up from the States, and don't even come near us.  We stop them and they start crying.  We've done nothing to them, it's just our reputation."

Officials say drivers bypass to avoid getting caught for mechanical, log book, or weight issues, but also to keep the wheels moving to make deliveries, meaning a bigger paycheck.
