A Thorold teenager is facing a list of charges including assaulting a police officer and attempting to injure a police dog.

One of the NRPs K9 officers found a vehicle parked outside an old commercial production plant in the Hayes Road and Allanburg Road area early Thursday morning, so they decided to investigate.

They discovered that two people had broken into the property, but they took off when the officer tried to confront them.

Police Service Dog Jax was able to track one of them down, and police say the suspect swung a knife at the dog several times.

The K9 officer was also cut by the knife while trying to disarm the suspect. The dog was not injured.

The suspect was taken to hospital with minor injuries afterwards.

The 17-year-old has been charged with the following offenses;

- Attempt to injure police dog

- Assault peace officer with a weapon

- Break and enter

- Possession of break-in instruments

- Mischief under $5,000

- Resisting arrest
