Federal Government Announces Plans to Build a Second Icebreaker for the Canadian Coastguard

Niagara MP Chris Bittle says this announcement will add dozens of new jobs to the Port Weller Drydock as St. Catharines helps to build the Coast Guard Fleet.

The Federal Government has announced plans for a second heavy icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard.

Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan made the announcement yesterday. This will give a much needed boost to the shipbuilding industry. 

Seaspan Shipyard and their partner Heddle Marine out of Hamilton won the bid to build the polar icebreaker for the Coast Guard. 

Niagara Falls MP Chris Bittle says this will mean tens of millions of Federal investment and potentially dozens of new jobs to the Port Weller Drydock as St Catharine's will help build the Coast Guard Fleet.

Seaspan has facilities in Hamilton, St. Catharine's, and Thunder Bay in Ontario, and in Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia.

President of Heddle Shipyards out of Hamilton Shaun Padulo says this is a milestone announcement.
