Councillor Wants More Indigenous Acknowledgement

Niagara Falls mayor adds people don't pay attention, and that needs to change

Bit of a disagreement between Niagara Falls' mayor and a city councillor over Indigenous acknowledgement at council and city events.

During last week's council meeting, Councillor Lori Lococo claimed there wasn't one.

Jim Diodati promptly spoke up, saying they do acknowledgements at the beginning of council meetings.  The councillor responded a land acknowledgement is different, to which the mayor said there is no difference, and that he's done a lot of consultation with Indigenous leaders on this.

The discussion came up during passing of a motion for the city to consider more acknowledgement options.

The mayor added the city has received praise for some videos it airs, but there's more to do.  "And part of the other concern is a lot places that do a standard, stock, boiler plate land acknowledgement, is that people don't even pay attention.  And I won't let that happen.  That's why whatever we do here, I'm going to bring forward something with staff, that's made in Niagara Falls."

Councillor Lococo pointed out simply reading a statement isn't enough, and some people are not satisfied with how it's done.
