City of Welland Approves Physician Incentive Recruitment Program

The program will be covered by the Economic Development Reserve Fund

The City of Welland is looking to recruit more doctors.

Council has passed a budget of $1 million for an incentive program to recruit physicians.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has deemed Welland as an area in high need of physicians.

Officials say the area is 17 family doctors short, as of February 2023.

The shortage is expected to increase due to expected population growth and the number of family doctors retiring.

"We recognize how critical healthcare and access to healthcare is," said Mayor Frank Campion. "This pledge by the City signals a clear and loud commitment to our residents that we will do everything we can to ensure they have access to family doctors and other healthcare services."

The City is looking to bring ten new doctors to the area through the program, and give $100,000 to family physicians who are starting their own practice or taking over an existing one.

The program will be covered by the Economic Development Reserve Fund .
