Calls to Reopen the Border Heating Up

Joint announcement expected this morning

The head of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and a New York Senator holding a media conference this morning demanding both Washington and Ottawa work to reopen the border to non essential traffic.

Dottie Gallagher and Chuck Schumer have a list of requests including a lifting of the quarantine rules for travellers who have proof of a COVID vaccine, a negative COVID test within the last 72 hours or antibodies from a prior positive case of COVID.

They also want both governments to develop plans with the CDC and Public Health Canada to minimize the risk of spreading COVID with an open border, including simplified guidelines for foreign entrants.

The two note Canadians make more than 3 million border trips into Western New York every year and spend in excess of $900 million.
