Budget Committee Approves NRP Budget

Chief feels comfortable with final tally, public safety won't be impacted

The Niagara region's budget committee has approved the police budget for next year.

Chief Bryan MacCulloch says it was approved after they found another $2-million in savings.

That came after looking at what to do with support staff, including a crime analyst supervisor, which help front-line officers.  "And how we phrased it to our board was that we weren't removing them, we were deferring them.  Because they are important, and we will be seeking to add those positions in next year's budget."

The Chief adds given Niagara's projected growth, and with that crime, they'll have evidence based data to support future funding requests.

Councillor Joyce Morocco wanted to get it approved.

"The different gangs that are coming in from Toronto and Hamilton and Brampton that you're dealing with, the crime is just unbelievable, and some of the stuff we don't read, that's unfortunate.  I want to make sure that when I'm out there telling people to come, that they're going to be safe."

Chief MacCulloch said he feels comfortable the cuts won't impact public safety.
