Thorold Runway Recognition Committee Announces Class of 2019
The Thorold Runway Recognition Committee are pleased to announced its 5 inductees into the Sports Hall Fame for the City of Thorold for 2019 . The TRRC celebrates the athletes, coaches and builders who’s accomplishments have made history in the city of Thorold .
They’ll be offering up plaques and words of gratitude during the annual Runway Recognition Gala on March 31st 2020 @ John Michaels’s Banquet Centre. Tickets are $20 and are available @ Thorold Credit Union.
Heres a closer look at the inductees:

Errol McKibbon began his hockey career in 1954 playing his minor hockey years in Thorold. In 1959 he was playing Junior C and made Junior B in 1960. After a year with the Thorold Junveniles he was scouted by Cornell University in Ithaca NY an All- Ivy League School. He excelled as a goalie for Cornell.
McKibbon was known for leading a winning streak with the team losing only one game all season from 1965-1966. His save percentage was .928% and his goals against average was 1.94. He went on to later have a successful career playing Senior Professional hockey and was part of the Allan Cup Championship team for the 1968-1969 season.

In 1970-1971 the Thorold Midget Hockey Team won the North American “A” division Silver Stick hockey championship in Sarnia ON. Thorold beat Renfrew 4-1 first then North Bay 6-2 in the preliminaries.
In the final game against ? Thorold won 4-1 again capturing the Championship. Coaches Lou Spancheff and Jim Latham were never prouder as their team was known for having three players for the All Star Team and bringing another great sports honour to the City of Thorold.

Paul Cecchini was one of Canada’s most dominant featherweight pullers. He won his first 11 national titles without losing a single match! 1987 was his best year, in which he won three nationals as well as two world titles. He was a five time Canadian arm wrestling champion as well as a world champion. Paul was known for his outstanding technique and his non-stop pacing before pulls. He has competed throughout North America from West to East Canada and as far as Las Vegas Nevada. He quotes “I just don’t give up, ever”. He was an intense competitor and a true example of a great champion.

Phil Persia played all his minor hockey in all divisions in the TAAA from Novice to Midget. The Oshawa Generals picked him up in 1969 as a midget. He played 50 games with the Junior A Club before returning to join the Thorold Junior B Club. He was not done there though, as the Long Island Ducks from the Eastern Hockey League picked him up shortly after. In two seasons with the team he accomplished scoring 19 goals and picking up 46 assists.
Along with these accomplishments, Phil also played high school football and was a swimming coach at the Thorold Kiwanis Pool. He truly was an all around Thorold Athlete.


Ryan Serravalle developed an interest for basketball while attending St Charles Catholic Elementary School. By the time he attended high school, that interest blossomed into a passionate love for the game, spawning an acclaimed career as point guard for the Monsignor Clancy Crusaders. This is where he led the varsity team to its first Gold and Silver OFSAA medals.
A proud, faithful son of Italian immigrants with an incredible work ethic and dreams of parlaying his talents into an NCAA Division 1 scholarship, Ryan earned a starting position for the Ontario provincial level team winning a national gold medal, which also merited an honourable invitation to play in the first All Star Raptors game for elite, high school athletes in Ontario.
After garnering attention from a number of NCAA Division 1 schools, he fulfilled his athletic and academic aspirations when he was awarded a full NCAA Division 1 scholarship at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. During his four year tenure, Ryan captained the Holy Cross Crusaders to two Patriot League Championships and two berths in the March Madness NCAA Tournament, joining the prestigious 1000 point club at The College of the Holy Cross. After his collegiate career, he played professional basketball in Poland, Italy and France, before returning home to grow his real estate business, Revel Realty Inc.
